Our work with the UK Government to empower marginalised women
Promoting equality in Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of the Congo with support from UK aid from the British people
Between 2013 and 2016, through the generous support of the UK government's Department for International Development (DFID) - now known as the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) as of 2 September 2020 - we were able to empower 10,500 of the most marginalised women in South Kivu (Democratic Republic of the Congo) and Enugu (Nigeria) to sustain livelihoods and to understand their rights, value and potential as well as contribute to the development of their communities. Alongside this, we trained 300 male community leaders on women’s rights and value in the community, and with their support, reached a further 5,450 male community members.
'If you don't have land you are nothing'
This film was made by women in Mumosho district, eastern DRC as part of a project funded by DFID (now known as FCDO). The women used film to highlight women’s ongoing struggle to access land – critical for cultivating food and earning an income – and to voice their own ideas for how these challenges can be addressed.
