Stronger women, Stronger Nations Programme

Our Stronger Women, Stronger Nations programme equips women to earn money, regain their confidence and actively participate in their communities

Our Stronger Women, Stronger Nations programme builds women’s capabilities in four key areas: earning and savings; rights and decision-making; health and wellness; and fostering support networks. Women receive hands-on vocational training in a variety of sectors and are supported to start small businesses, build networks, and to take on leadership roles in their communities.

She learns a marketable job skill and starts saving money

Building brighter futures

She learns a marketable job skill - such as tailoring, bread-making or poultry-keeping, as well as business training to turn her chosen skill into a stable income so she can support herself and her family. She can begin to save her money, too, and receives support to establish cooperatives, associations, or village savings and loan associations (VSLAs) so she and other women in her community can make the most of their earnings.

She learns about her rights

She also learns about her rights on key issues like voting, access to land, divorce, custody of her children and domestic abuse. Once she learns her rights she is empowered and equipped to stand up for them and can share her knowledge with others in her community.

Why it matters: Learning about human rights gives women the confidence to raise their voices and men the ability to respect the opinions of the women in their lives.

She gains practical knowledge about her health

Improving physical and psychosocial wellbeing

She also learns practical knowledge about her health, including reproductive health, stress management and the importance of good hygiene and nutrition so she can protect herself and her family from preventable disease. We make sure she is connected to local healthcare providers.

Why it matters: Basic health education and connecting with local care providers enables women to best protect their and their family's wellbeing.

She connects to networks

The power of sisterhood

When a woman joins the programme, she comes together with 24 other women, forming a tight support group that helps to break the isolation caused by war and insecurity. Together, they share experiences, ideas, and resources. They invest in businesses and work to find solutions to common challenges and opportunities for change.

Why it matters: Connecting with other women is a source of strength and provides new social and economic opportunities for growth.

Complementary Programmes

Our new Adolescent Girls programme is designed to address the unique needs of teenage girls aged 16-17.

Our community-led approach is championed through our grassroots advocacy, the Change Agent programme. Change Agents drive forward their self-identified priorities to achieve sustainable and long-term change.

In order to help women to break through the stereotypes that limit their opportunities, we work with men to challenge discrimination and help them become allies in the fight for gender equality. Since 2002, we have worked with over 52,809 men through our Men's Engagement Programme.
