#HopeInSisterhood Online Film Club
Our Online Film Club is back this October
As part of our #HopeInSisterhood campaign, join us on Wednesday 28th October at 6:15pm (GMT) for a special online screening of Miss Sarajevo – a powerful documentary set during the Bosnian War in 1993. The film tells the story of young people trapped in Sarajevo at the height of the city’s siege, using hand-held camera footage to capture the human face of conflict.
We’re very excited to be joined for an exclusive post-screening Q&A by Miss Sarajevo’s award-winning director, Bill Carter; Seida Sarić, Director of Žene za Žene in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and writer and journalist Jennifer Nadel, who reported on the Bosnian War for ITV. The event will be hosted by our Executive Director, Brita Fernandez Schmidt.
The panellists will be discussing the themes of the film and sharing their personal experiences of the Bosnian conflict and lessons we can take forward. We will also be opening up the floor for your questions and hope you will get involved in the conversation! You can read more about our inspiring speakers below.
To ensure this event is accessible to as many of our supporters as possible, we have priced the tickets on a sliding scale, starting at just £3. Please choose a donation amount based on what you are able to contribute right now.
100% of proceeds from this event will support our work with women survivors of war.
WARNING GRAPHIC CONTENT: Please be aware that this films contains real life scenes of conflict, injury and death that some viewers may find upsetting.
Seida Sarić
Seida Sarić was the first ever Country Director of a Women for Women International country programme, helping to serve nearly 80,000 women in Bosnia and Herzegovina since 1993. In 2015, Seida led the transition of the Bosnia and Herzegovina Country Office to become Žene za Žene, a locally registered NGO affiliated to Women for Women International.
She is also a survivor of conflict herself: for more than four years, Seida lived under siege in Sarajevo, risking her life on a daily basis to provide emergency services to her fellow citizens trapped in the city.
Bill Carter
Bill Carter is the critically acclaimed author of three nonfiction books ("Fools Rush In", "Red Summer" & "Boom, Bust, Boom") and director of the award-winning documentary film Miss Sarajevo (International Monitor Award), produced by Bono. He's a 2014 Living Now Book Awards silver medalist and 2013 AZ/NM book award winner. His critically acclaimed books have been shortlisted by critics ranging from the BBC to Nancy Pearl.
Bill Carter currently teaches Documentary Studies at Northern Arizona University's School of Communication.
Jennifer Nadel
Jennifer Nadel is a writer and award-winning journalist based in London. She has reported for the BBC, Channel 4 and ITN from around the world. Her investigative report from Bosnia for ITV showed that rape was being used as a weapon of war by the Serbs. It was later used by UN War Crimes investigators.
Her most recent book is WE: A Manifesto for Women Everywhere, co-authored with Gillian Anderson.
Brita Fernandez Schmidt
In 2008, Brita was matched with her first sposored sister, Amela, from Bosnia and Herzegovina and they began to exchange letters.
More than 10 years later, Amela and Brita met for the first time – on the porch of Amela's house, overlooking her garden where the tulips bloom every year. Bought with the money she received from Women for Women International, the tulips remind Amela of the power of hope in the darkest times, and the bonds of friendship and community that kept her going and gave her strength.
