BBC RADIO 4 APPEAL

The BBC Radio 4 Appeal is a weekly 3 minute programme highlighting the work of a charity and appealing for donations to support its activities. The appeal is a fantastic way for Women for Women International to engage with the BBC's audience.

Listen to our appeal read by Women for Women International Ambassador, Thomasina Miers.

MEET DONATA

Thomasina's Stand With Her sister

"Before, we only knew each other as neighbours. Now, we are friends and we plan together to lift ourselves out of poverty." Donata is a survivor of the 1994 Rwandan genocide and graduated from our programme last year. Thomasina will be sharing Donata's powerful story during the appeal. Today you can change the life of a woman like Donata by supporting a woman survivor of war through our year-long training programme. Your sister will learn about four key modules; her health, rights, skills and potential support networks. Not only will your sister's life be changed forever, but her family and friends will feel the ripple effect of her training and empowerment.

During the sessions on decision-making and women’s rights, my eyes were opened. It made me appreciate myself more as a human being.

Our neighbour knocked at the door and asked ‘Why are you not escaping?’ She told us that they are kidnapping girls and killing men, so we decided to run away and not take anything with us.

Claudine

I know that I should take courage because I survived a hard situation. Every day, I have to wake up and pray and say, thank you God, for I’m still alive. It was hard but now I’m here.
