HEAR FROM JOYCE

Joyce is a participant of our Stronger Women, Stronger Nations programme in Nigeria.

From birth, women and girls where we work in conflict-affected northern Nigeria face a daily threat of violence, whether physical, sexual, emotional or psychological. For many, fear and stigma stop survivors from speaking out. The UN estimates that in conflict zones, for every rape that is reported, between 10 and 20 rapes are not.

In our year-long Stronger Women, Stronger Nations programme, women learn about their right to be protected from rape, domestic violence and other forms of abuse. They learn about their value and how to use the power of their voice for change.

Watch this video to hear from Joyce as she shares her reflections.

The Women for Women International programme was my ray of hope. It felt like I was finally completing my education which was cut short by poverty.

If someone had told me in the past that I would need to restart my life from scratch, I couldn't believe it. But that is what happened to me when I needed to flee to Poland with my son.

Being in the programme, I enjoyed having the space to connect with other women in the skill-building and social empowerment classes. I was learning things that I never imagined I would have the opportunity to learn in my life.
