Goal 1: No Poverty

End poverty in all its forms everywhere.

2% OF WOMEN PARTICIPANTS REPORT EARNING AT LEAST $1.90 A DAY

TARGET 1.1: ERADICATE EXTREME POVERTY.

2% of women graduates of our programme in Iraq reported personal earnings of at least $1.90 a day, compared to 6% at enrolment.

Throughout 2022,  COVID-19 and associated lockdown measures continued to impact the women on our programmes and their ability to engage in social gatherings and income generating activities – including their participation in the training provided by Women for Women International.

Goal 1: No Poverty

End poverty in all its forms everywhere.

11% OF WOMEN PARTICIPANTS REPORT SAVING A PORTION OF THEIR EARNINGS

TARGET 1.5: BY 2030, BUILD THE RESILIENCE OF THE POOR AND THOSE IN VULNERABLE SITUATIONS AND REDUCE THEIR EXPOSURE AND VULNERABILITY TO CLIMATE-RELATED EXTREME EVENTS AND OTHER ECONOMIC, SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENT SHOCKS AND DISASTERS.

Between enrolment and graduation the percentage of women reporting saving a portion of their earnings remained at 11% in Iraq. It is important to note that in Iraq there are different social norms that impact women’s economic empowerment.

Some women take the duration of the Stronger Women, Stronger Nations programme to build their vocational skills and then develop their business ideas after the programme and graduate data has been collected. This may reflect the lack of growth in women’s savings between enrolment and graduation.

Goal 2: Zero Hunger

End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture

88% OF WOMEN GRADUATES REPORT NO FOOD SHORTAGE IN THE LAST 4 WEEKS

TARGET 2.1: BY 2030, END HUNGER AND ENSURE ACCESS BY ALL PEOPLE IN PARTICULAR THE POOR AND PEOPLE IN VULNERABLE SITUATIONS, INCLUDING INFANTS, TO SAFE, NUTRITIOUS AND SUFFICIENT FOOD ALL YEAR ROUND.

Upon graduating from our year-long programme, 88% of women reported having sufficient food in the house in the last four weeks compared to 70% at enrolment.

Goal 3: Good Health and Wellbeing

Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all, at all ages.

40% OF WOMEN PARTICIPANTS REPORT PRACTISING FAMILY PLANNING

TARGET 3.7: BY 2030, ENSURE ACCESS TO SEXUAL AND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH-CARE SERVICES, INCLUDING FAMILY PLANNING, INFORMATION AND EDUCATION.

Women on our programme in Iraq reported sometimes practising family planning. There was a percentage decline between enrolment and graduation, from 65% to 40%. One reason for this might be the long term impact that COVID-19 has had one women’s agency.

Goal 4: Quality Education

Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.

84% OF SCHOOL-AGED GIRLS (5-17 YEARS) IN SCHOOL

TARGET 4.1: BY 2030, ENSURE THAT ALL GIRLS AND BOYS COMPLETE FREE, EQUITABLE AND QUALITY PRIMARY EDUCATION LEADING TO RELEVANT AND EFFECTIVE LEARNING OUTCOMES.

84% of school aged girls related to women enrolled on our programme were in school at graduation in comparison to 84% at enrolment.

*This year we have changed our approach to collecting data on girls' education to provide us with a more accurate average. Therefore, this year's data on girls' education should not be directly compared with previous years.

Goal 5: Gender Equality

Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls

1% INCREASE IN PERCEIVED SELF-EFFICACY OF WOMEN PARTICIPANTS

TARGET 5.1: BY 2030, END ALL FORMS OF DISCRIMINATION AGAINST ALL WOMEN AND GIRLS EVERYWHERE.

The perceived self-efficacy of the women on our programme in Iraq has increased marginally by graduation, from 0.72 on average to 0.73 on a scale of 0-1. This figure at enrolment is relatively high which shows how despite harsh and constantly changing circumstances, graduates generally improve or sustain their sense of self-efficacy year over year, even during pandemics.

Goal 5: Gender Equality

Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls

36% OF WOMEN REPORT BEING INVOLVED IN DECISIONS ABOUT HAVING MORE CHILDREN

TARGET 5.6: BY 2030, ENSURE UNIVERSAL ACCESS TO SEXUAL AND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH AND RIGHTS AS AGREED IN ACCORDANCE WITH INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS.

36% of women graduates of our programme in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq reported being involved in decisions about having more children compared to 85% at enrolment. This relative decrease reflects the different context in Iraq and the potential long-term impact that COVID-19 has had on women’s agency within the home.

Goal 8: Good jobs and economic growth

Promote inclusive and sustainable economic growth, employment and decent work for all

8% OF WOMEN REPORT EMPLOYMENT

TARGET 8.3: PROMOTE POLICIES TO SUPPORT JOB CREATION AND GROWING ENTERPRISES

On graduation of our programme in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, 8% of women reported employment across all occupation compared to 1% at enrolment. Whilst this figure is still relatively low the significant increase between enrolment and graduation affirms the importance of incorporating economic empowerment into holistic women’s rights programmes like ours.

“It was my desire to learn crochet and make things by my hand, Women for Women International’s programme achieved this goal for me, I have learned nice things from the trainer and, I wear the gloves, scarf and hat that I made, my plans are to develop myself and earn money from skills start my own work.”

Goal 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions

Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels.

12% OF WOMEN HAVE SPOKEN PUBLICLY AGAINST ABUSE OF WOMEN

16.1: BY 2030, SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCE ALL FORMS OF VIOLENCE AND RELATED DEATH RATES EVERYWHERE.

12% of graduates from our programme in Iraq  reported publicly speaking out against abuse of women compared to 15% at enrolment. This decline may reflect over-reporting at enrolment and a change in the depth of understanding of what it means to speak out publicly against the abuse of women as a result of lessons learnt on the Stronger Women, Stronger Nations programme

Goal 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions

Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels.

70% OF GRADUATES DISCUSSED COMMUNITY ISSUES WITH EACH OTHER

TARGET 16.7: BY 2030, ENSURE RESPONSIVE, INCLUSIVE, PARTICIPATORY AND REPRESENTATIVE DECISION-MAKING AT ALL LEVELS.

The percentage of women who discussed issues with other women in their community increased from 53% at enrolment to 70% at graduation. The relatively high baseline represents the high level of engagement that women of Iraq have with each other.
