My RideLondon ideas, tips & tricks
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, several fundraising events including Prudential RideLondon - an annual mass participation cycling festival – have been postponed or cancelled. This has greatly impacted UK charities, including Women for Women International, at a time when women survivors of war need us the most. While the event cannot go ahead as planned this year, there is no stopping us! We are keeping the wheels moving and celebrating the festival weekend on 15th and 16th August with My Prudential RideLondon.
Participating in My RideLondon is your chance to be part of the world's greatest virtual cycling event whilst raising vital funds for women survivors of war. To get you started, here are a few ideas and tips:
Zoe
Zoe's top cycling tip
- Have a mental playlist in your head. That way, when the going gets tough you can draw on some top tunes to help you through. I find ‘Survivor’ by Destiny’s Child empowers me to cycle uphill!

I’ll be cycling 46 miles. This is the distance from my home in London to Whitstable on the Kent coast. This is where I spent every childhood summer so I’m full of nostalgia for seaside views, paddling in the sea and fish and chips on the beach. A very welcome destination after a long bike ride!
Jane and Khem
Jane and Khem are true pros! Make sure to read their essential cycling tips
- Consider investing in a pair of cycling shorts as they make long rides a lot more comfortable
- Check your bike before leaving - make sure the brakes are working, the tyres are pumped and the chain is lubricated
- Take plenty of water
- Make sure you have a pump and a spare inner tube or puncture repair kit with you just in case
Sarah
Sarah's scooting tip
-
I'm not a cycling fan, but that's not preventing me from participating in My RideLondon! My top scooting tip would be to find a flat surface to scoot on - this doesn't have to be on your road, it can be in your garden too, you just need to make sure it's flat so you can gather enough speed!

On Saturday, I'll be scooting 19 laps around my garden to raise vital funds for women affected by war and conflict.
Julia
Check out Julia's advice
- Buy a phone mount so you don't get lost!
- Take a friend with you and go on a mini cycling adventure! This is me at Box Hill, a beauty spot in the Surrey hills - it felt amazing to discover a new place.
Julia's #MyPRL challenge
- 46 miles is quite a long journey for me to complete, so instead I'll be cycling for 46 minutes around my area. I'll make sure to prepare the best route to enjoy the scenic views!
Preeya
Preeya's top tip
- Plan your route to use bike lanes, towpaths, or parks – it’s much safer than being on the road, and don't forget to wear a helmet!
Preeya's #MyPRL challenge
- Since I don't have a commute at the moment, taking part in #MyPRL is a great way for me to stay active! Next weekend, I'll be scooting for 100 minutes, which is the time it would take me to walk from my home to my work place.
The possibilities for My Prudential RideLondon challenges are endless - you can get as creative and active as you'd like! Have fun, stay safe and raise funds for marginalised women.
