Our Partnership

Your support is having a transformative impact on the lives of women survivors of war

There are currently 26 live conflicts in the world, spanning five continents (source: Global Conflict Tracker). In conflict-affected communities, women are the most impacted - contending with rights violations, gender-based violence, lack of essential health services and suitable economic opportunities.

Our programmes are holistic, equipping women with knowledge, skills and resources to rebuild their lives – while regaining hope. Women graduating our programmes:

  1. Defend their rights, with a 425% increase in women speaking out publicly against gender-based violence
  2. Generate earnings and join savings groups, on average increasing household income by 199%
  3. Strengthen their communities, with a 200% increase in women taking up local leadership positions
  4. Pass skills and knowledge to neighbours and children for lasting impact

We engage men, decision-makers and whole communities to champion women’s active participation in public life – because our 30 years of experience have shown that when women use their power, they create a ripple effect of change for generations to come.

By 2030, two-thirds of the most impoverished communities will be plunged into conflict and violence (source: World Bank). Our 10-year strategy aims to reach 1 million women, scale individual and community impact, and increase our role as a policy and advocacy catalyst for change.

By raising awareness and fundraising for Women for Women International, you and everyone at Allen & Overy can play a pivotal part in ensuring every woman has the power to transform her own life.

#SheInspiresMe

The women in our programmes have suffered immense hardship, but their strength is inspirational. By giving your support, taking action, and lending your voice you help to create a chain of inspiration. Together we will use the power of our collective voice to support women in war-torn countries.

Our Stronger Women, Stronger Nations programme

Your partnership is having a direct impact on the lives of hundreds of women survivors of war

Our Stronger Women, Stronger Nations programme builds women’s capabilities in four key areas: earning and savings; rights and decision-making; health and wellness; and fostering support networks. Women receive hands on training in a variety of industries — including sustainable agriculture, animal husbandry, and beekeeping. They are supported to start small businesses, build networks, and to take on leadership roles in their communities.

Change Agents Programme

Your partnership is helping women change their communities

Our Change Agent programme builds on our year-long programme by supporting groups of Women for Women International graduates to strengthen their leadership and advocacy skills. In particular, the programme helps women to identify issues in their communities and create action plans to challenge these issues. After the training, Change Agents form advocacy groups in their communities, to build networks and work together to challenge community practices and laws that discriminate against women.

Men's Engagement Programme

Your partnership is supporting our mission to achieve gender equality

In order to help women to break through the stereotypes that limit their opportunities, we work with men to challenge discrimination and help them become allies in the fight for gender equality. We have seen how engaging with men can build their capacity to understand the negative consequences of inequality for not just women, but for the entire community. Since 2002, we have worked with nearly 51,000 men through our Men's Engagement Programme.

Conflict Response Fund

Your partnership is helping us reach more survivors of war

In 2018, we launched our Conflict Response Fund in order to act quickly and invest in women in emerging conflict zones around the world. Through a non-partisan approach and responsive grants, we are able to track crises in real time, identify credible partners on the ground and allocate resources to meet the urgent needs of women survivors, no matter what side of the conflict they are on.

Inspiring stories from the women we serve

Sameera, Iraq

subtitle:

"I saw its value and how women in the programme were able to grow out of the depression they’d been living in. Interacting with other women made my life easier and helped me find calm. I realised I am not the only one dealing with difficulties."

"While I do not know what the future holds for us, I feel I can finally build pieces of my life back together, one step at a time."

Olga, Ukraine

subtitle:

"If someone had told me in the past that I would need to restart my life from scratch, I wouldn't believe it. But that is what happened to me when I needed to flee to Poland with my son...recently I was able to find a job in a bakery. I'm a former lawyer and used to working in an office, so this is a very different kind of work for me."

When we started Women for Women International, we couldn’t have predicted just how many women would be affected by conflict 30 years later. We thought that Bosnia would be the last time.
